Club Newsletter

January 2025

Happy New Year!   We are looking forward to a great 2025 filled with opportunities to foster the learning, playing and enjoying of the game of pickleball.  Here are a few things to be aware of in January.

Player Development

Two, two-week sessions are planned for Thursday afternoon 1:00 to 3:00, January 9 through 30.  The second week of each session is planned for a round robin with coaching.  The sessions are for newer / lower intermediate players to build skills and feel comfortable participating in open play. Please see the Club website lessons page for additional information.  The contact to register or for questions is Alan Stoick at 253-709-5841.

Note:  At this time there are only 5 members signed up total for the two lessons.  A minimum of 8 is desired, so please sign up.  We will consolidate to one session if a minimum cannot be obtained.

Court Management / Court Reservations

Please use the "Hold My Court" reservation system when you use a court to help the Club build court usage statistics.

For convenience, QR Codes have been posted on the Club bulletin boards, by both courts, to connect you directly to the "Hold My Court" site to either check or make a reservation.

The QR codes work are per:

- On your smart phone, open the camera app

- Hover the phone camera over the 'QR Square' for either a court or the ball machine reservation.

- A web address will appear at the top of you device when the camera reads the QR, simply tap that web address and the "Hold My Court" site will open.

Membership: (and Dues renewal)

A flyer about the SSV Pickleball Club has been posted to the main Activities bulletin board across from the HOA office. On that flyer are two QR codes, one goes to the club's website and one takes them to the membership sign-up on Ticket Tailor.  The court bulletin boards have been updated with the new information and QR codes.  Your existing badges will still need to be punched by the membership committee, with the next opportunity (when and where) communicated in a separate email.

APPL League

Come watch our SSV APPL teams play other teams from across the east valley. Play starts the week of January 6th and goes through mid-March. We have 6 teams that are competing. Matches are played on the west courts. The teams and the match schedules are on the club's website. You can also see the schedule using the QR code on the team listing on the west court bulletin board.

Upcoming Club Meetings:

Club Board Meeting, Jan 6, 2025 at 9 am in majestic Card Room.  The agenda has been posted on website (1 week before).  If you do not see items that you feel should be discussed by the Club Board, please contact any of the club board members or call 253-709-5841.

Club Members Meeting, Jan. 15, 2025, 1 pm in San Tan Auditorium (Agenda posted on website 1 week before).

We did not have a quorum (39 of required 90) at the December meeting so please mark your calendars now.  There are several topics of which we will need to discuss and vote on:

April 2024

“April showers bring May flowers!” We have all heard that phrase and understand that our days are not always as sunny, yet storms bring change and allow growth.

Many of the things that happened at the last Pickleball Club meeting were not respectful and procedurally correct.  Much of what took place at the meeting should not have taken place, by both sides, by membership and Board members.

Members of the new SSV Pickleball Club Board are going to be listening to the members, and not making decisions without proper transparent communications to all members beforehand.  This is your club and we are here to serve you!

If you have things that need to be brought forward, then bring it up to the Board as an agenda item so that it can be discussed.  Then, if it needs to be brought before the membership, it can be placed on the Agenda for the next general meeting and it will get discussed.

One idea (flower) we will try this year is a monthly newsletter to members summarizing the operations and activities for the month, as well as, focusing on the opportunities we have as we continue to grow as a club.  Opportunities (additional flowers) do not become reality without your help.  There will be a Membership Survey sent to all members later this month with questions that will help us better understand where we stand as a club, and where we can plant the flowers of change.  Like the “… brings May Flowers” phrase we have also heard the phrase “Many hands make light work!”

As we close out this winter season of Pickleball, we would like to thank the previous club board, and the leaders and members who served on club committees.  [If you don’t know, we currently have four primary committees helping the Pickleball Club Board focus on learning, playing and enjoying the game of Pickleball here at SSV.]  Along with committee support, there are several members that play key roles in our club operations.  Jon and Coralee Peake kept our membership processes timely and efficient, Jody Ball enabled the Player Development committee to establish a baseline format on which we can build, Von Miller, Cheri Pomeroy and Bill Smith facilitated daily pickleball play as part of court management and court care, and Rick Mattson for the time and effort to create opportunities on and off the court for our members to get to know and enjoy each other.  There are more people we are grateful to have in our club and we will make it a point to highlight them in future newsletters.

As you leave SSV for the summer or stay here year-round, and as you participate in the upcoming Club Survey, please contemplate your role in our club.  A role that will help us fulfill our Club’s purpose to learn, play and enjoy the game of pickleball, both on and off the court!

Respectfully,

Alan Stoick
